Pura Luhur Uluwatu

These are pictures of the Uluwatu temple in the south of Bali.It is situated high on a cliff over the ocean on Bali's south-western tip. The temple guards Bali from evil spirits from the South-West, in which major deities dwell. The temple is open only to Hindu worshippers. I was not aware of this when I visited and trespassed, for which I apologize to the Hindu Gods. It is one of the oldest and most important temples in Bali, one of the six original 'Sad Kahyangan' (territorial) temples on the island. It was established in the 11th century by the Holy Priest Empu Kuturan. The temple is famous for it's kecak dance. The Kecak Dance is part of the Ramayana, and it is the dance of the monkeys, the followers of Hanuman, the Monkey-God.
If or when you go there be aware of the real monkeys who are very naughty and will try to grab anything they can lay their hands on; they are especially fond of eyeglasses and handbags. The beach at Uluwatu is considered one of the best surfing spots. Uluwatu is also famous for it sunsets.
